About Event
Construction is the key to civilization. The construction activities involve the whole households. The construction process starts with planning, design, financing and then creating the real structure. There are three major sectors of construction viz. buildings, infrastructure and industrial. India's total spending on construction has been about $427 billion in 2013. But, the unique geo-climatic conditions in India make her highly vulnerable to natural disasters. In India, about 57% of land is vulnerable to earthquakes, of which 12% is vulnerable to severe earthquakes, 12% to floods, 8% to cyclones, etc. Other types of disasters include landslides, fires, chemical and industrial disasters. The main reason for all this is the rapid unplanned urbanization and growth of cities. The high unpredictability of these events makes it more important to engineer disaster resilient structures. The planning, design, material used should all focus on to make the structures resilient so as to minimize the loss of life and property due to these disasters. One has also witnessed structures' collapse during construction, too. There are various reasons for this. Better planning, design and site management can help avoid disasters at the construction site. This one-day seminar will present an opportunity to students of polytechnics in the branches of Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Interior Design and Fabrication & Erection Engineering to present their research with a focus on planning of buildings, the design trends and the use of new construction materials to make the structures safe and disaster-resilient.
